  • Each trade has a clear area of responsibility.

  • Tilers often grout their own work. Alternatively, you can call in an expert.

  • Tasks involving electricity always need an electrician or electrical contractor.

What are trades and which ones are there?

The term "trade" generally refers to the different types of construction work carried out on a building site. These manual and technical tasks are handled by specialist companies.

The site manager is responsible for coordinating and monitoring the different trades working on a construction project. The site manager also ensures adherence to the budget, building regulations and safety measures. At the end of the project, the site manager approves the trade works.

Planners and architects: visionary designers of your dream bathroom

Planners and architects are the people who plan and design the technical and economic aspects of a construction project. They know the requirements for each individual project – from legal aspects to the client's needs and building regulations. A bathroom architect works out measurements and plans individual installations such as pipes and tubes, in particular in the case of a complete refurbishment.

Plumbers: experts in sanitary ceramic installation

The answer to the questions "Who installs washbasins" or "Who installs a shower tray" is clear: plumbers or fitters. Plumbers are responsible for installing sanitary facilities, including washbasins, baths, showers, toilets and bidets. They also install taps. In addition to these tasks, plumbers fit connections and pipes and are involved in both new builds and renovations. They also install heating systems throughout the building.

Bricklayers: surface preparation and tiling professionals

Bricklayers are responsible for constructing the shell of the building. In existing buildings, bricklayers also prepare the substrate for subsequent work. Insulation is a task for bricklayers too, although above-ground insulation work is usually carried out by painters or plasterers.

The following trades are also involved:

Electricians: specialists for your whirlpool

To install and repair electrical systems, you will need the services of an electrician or electrical contractor. This tradesperson handles wiring, sockets and high-tension currents – for the cooker or larger bathroom installations such as a whirlpool bath – throughout the house.

Drywall builders: specialists in structural adaptations

Drywall builders put up partition walls, for example, to visually separate spaces. They can also clad walls, suspend ceilings and much more. In the bathroom, these are the people to contact for any half-height walls you might want to install later to separate different areas.

Tilers: expertise in tiling around the bath

Tilers are important tradespeople for bathrooms as they install the floor and wall coverings. Tilers work in other rooms too and carry out essential tasks. As well as tiles, they also lay slabs, mosaics and terrazzo. Tilers, of course, also prepare the substrate, seal it and install grouting, including silicone joints.

Correct sequence of trades

What is the correct planning sequence for trades in a construction project? We explain the ideal order of work:

  1. First, find an architect or planner to handle the initial planning phase and later take on the role of site manager.

  2. It is then time for the bricklayers and drywaller builders to start the shell construction and interior work.

  3. By this point at the latest, several trades will need to work together. Preparatory work for plumbing and electrical installations usually takes place in parallel.

  4. Once the preparatory work has been completed, further work can be carried out by the drywall builder. Screed is laid at this point, for example.

  5. The tiler then lays the floor and wall tiles.

  6. The main work is now carried out by plumbers and electricians.

  7. The tiler is usually responsible for grouting the bathroom after the sanitary ceramics have been installed.

  8. Finally, you can find painters and decorators to decorate the remaining walls.

Info:

The site manager oversees the correct sequence of trades during a construction project. This person ties all the threads together. As the client, you naturally have a say in which companies you would like to use.
