Rimless toilet: the future of bathroom hygiene

For many years, the rim has increasingly been eliminated from public toilets. And this modern toilet design is a growing trend in private households too. Villeroy & Boch is one of the first manufacturers in the world to have recognised the benefits of rimless toilets in comparison with their conventional counterparts and developed models without a rim.
Are you thinking about installing a rimless toilet in your bathroom and want to take a closer look at how they work and learn more about the different versions and their possible benefits? Read on to find out all you need to know about these innovative freestanding and wall-mounted toilets.

Different types of rimless toilets

Conventional toilets

In a conventional toilet, the flush water is channelled into the bowl through a rim with a hollow space. It doesn’t take long for impurities to accumulate in this hard to reach area under the rim - creating a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Conventional toilets, in particular in high-traffic areas such as hospitals, schools and nurseries, can therefore become a hygiene problem. Even at home, more time and effort are required to clean a rimmed toilet bowl in comparison with a rimless model.

Rimless toilets

A rimless toilet has no rim whatsoever, which means there is no hollow space or projecting edge under which dirt, limescale and bacteria can accumulate. To make sure the water still rinses the entire inner surface, a special flush diverter uses controlled pressure to channel the flow left and right through the bowl. This creates a very high flushing performance. However, simply eliminating the rim does not provide the best flushing results, as shown in a large-scale test by the TÜV Rheinland. While rimless toilets performed significantly better than their conventional rimmed counterparts, Villeroy & Boch’s rimless Direct Flush toilets outperformed them all.

Rimless Direct Flush toilets

Direct Flush toilets use an optimised water flow to deliver maximum flushing performance. Rather than an all-round rim, they have a continuous closed edge that ensures complete rinsing of the inner basin all the way to the top of the bowl. In addition to these hygiene benefits, our Direct Flush toilets also impress with their exceptional efficiency. Just 3 to 4.5 litres of water are all that is needed to achieve this high flushing performance.

AntiBac

The innovative AntiBac surface technology provides lasting protection against bacteria and effectively inhibits their spread and proliferation. The antibacterial finish is integrated directly in the ceramic and toilet seat to ensure its continued effectiveness throughout the entire product life cycle. AntiBac also helps to significantly reduce the use of chemical cleaning products and surface disinfectants on toilets and toilet seats, without compromising on hygiene. With no additional chemicals, silver ions integrated in the glaze inhibit the growth of all kinds of bacteria by more than 99.9 per cent. The silver ions are integrated as microparticles and therefore, unlike the significantly smaller nanoparticles, represent no risk for humans or the environment. The antibacterial effect has been confirmed by the independent BOKEN Quality Evaluation Institute. The glaze has also been dermatologically tested, found to be safe and approved.

CeramicPlus

The ceramic is also treated with our innovative CeramicPlus surface finish: for over a decade, this excellent finish that significantly simplifies cleaning and care has been available for selected rimless toilets and other bathroom ceramics. On contact with the CeramicPlus surface, water forms droplets which then carry away residue such as limescale or dirt. And if anything happens to be left behind, it can be removed far more quickly and easily than from conventional surfaces.

ViFresh

ViFresh, the integrated freshness solution from Villeroy & Boch, is a very convenient and easy way to ensure a fresh fragrance and hygienic care for your rimless toilet. In many models, the innovative rim block compartment is integrated directly behind the seat, concealing it almost entirely from view. ViFresh is compatible with all standard rim blocks or scented toilet gels and avoids the need to touch unhygienic areas such as the inner bowl.

The modern bathroom with blue-green walls has a Venticello wall-mounted toilet and a bidet. There is also a shelf with toiletries and a framed photo as well as a small side table with a towel and bathroom utensils next to the shutters.

A modern rimless toilet should, of course, also have an elegant, timeless design. This is perfectly illustrated by the washdown toilet from the Venticello collection. The understated purity of its contemporary rectangular design coordinates perfectly in a wide range of bathroom styles. This floor-standing toilet featuring a trendy matt look and rimless technology also has a CeramicPlus surface finish to allow fast and thorough cleaning.

Advantages of a rimless toilet

There are many convincing arguments in favour of rimless toilets. For years, they have been emerging as a standard choice for public toilets thanks to their improved hygiene - possibly the most important advantage of rimless toilet bowls. In rimmed toilets, bacteria and other impurities can quickly accumulate under the difficult to access rim and removal is an onerous task. A rimless design eliminates this problem. The entire surface of the bowl is visible and deposits can be quickly and completely removed.
Rimless toilets can also be cleaned and cared for far more quickly and easily, especially models with a CeramicPlus finish. The absence of a rim allows direct access to all surfaces for easy cleaning with a cloth - no contorted movements required.
